Boris Johnson confirms vaccine passports introduction - what it means for Newcastle United fans

Newcastle United supporters hoping to attend matches over the next few weeks will have to show either their NHS Covid-19 Pass or a negative lateral flow test.

That news comes as part of the government’s newly-introduced restrictions to combat the spread of the Omnicron variant.

Anyone in the United Kingdom attending an event where an excess of 10,000 people are expected will have to show either proof that they have had the vaccine or proof of a negative test.

That rule does not come into effect until Wednesday, December 15. That means that Newcastle supporters visiting King Power Stadium on Sunday afternoon will not be affected.

The first match that will be affected is next Thursday’s visit to Anfield while the first home match where that rule will be applied is next weekend’s clash with Manchester City at St James’ Park.

Several other restrictions were introduced by Boris Johnson on Wednesday evening as he called a Covid-19 press conference amid the ongoing allegations against him and fellow government ministers.

The other main restrictions affect mostly the hospitality and entertainment sectors as the wearing of masks in most indoor settings will be enforced from Friday onwards.
