Boris Johnson confirms if coronavirus certificates will be needed to enter pubs

Prime Minister Boris Johnson says the requirement of coronavirus certificates to attend premises such as a pub could be decided by landlords.

Asked if such a certificate could be required for the pub, Mr Johnson told the Commons Liaison Committee: “I think that that’s the kind of thing – it may be up to individual publicans, it may be up to the landlord.”

On travel, the PM acknowledged that things were “looking difficult on the continent” when asked about when international travel could resume.

“On April 5, we’ll get the findings of the global travel taskforce and I’ll be setting out what I think may be possible from May 17,” he told the Commons Liaison Committee.

“Things are looking difficult on the continent and we’ll have to look at the situation as it develops.

Boris Johnson said “we have to look at the situation at the Channel” and “we can’t rule out tougher measures and we will put them in if necessary” to tackle the risk of importing coronavirus variants from France.

“If it’s necessary to bring in testing then we will do so, but I think you should understand the balance of doing that, the disruption to trade, and the risk that we are trying to address,” he told the Liaison Committee.

In response to questioning from Labour’s Yvette Cooper he said: “We will take a decision, no matter how tough, to interrupt that trade, to interrupt those flows, if we think that it is necessary to protect public health and to stop new variants coming in.

“It may be that we have to do that very soon.”
