Boris Johnson confirms Everton and Liverpool fans will be allowed inside grounds this month

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has confirmed Everton and Liverpool fans will be allowed to return to Goodison Park and Anfield this month.

The PM confirmed in his latest update that supporters would be allowed back into stadiums in England for the first time in 2021.

As a result, every team will now play one home match in front of their supporters, with games scheduled to take place on May 18-19 and Sunday, May 23.

The general public will now be permitted to meet outdoors in groups of 30 from May 17th as planned, while indoor mixing will be allowed with up to six people from two different households.

"I can confirm today we have met the four tests for further easing lockdown restrictions,” Johnson told the nation in his 5pm announcement.

“We’ll unlock the turnstiles to our sports stadia, subject to capacity limits.”

Everton will be allowed up to 6,500 back inside Goodison Park for their final home game versus Wolves on Wednesday, May 19.

That comes after the council gave the green light to government plans for restricted attendances on Monday morning.

While a total of 10,000 fans will be allowed at Anfield for Liverpool's game against Crystal Palace on Sunday, May 23.

Despite the Prime Minister’s announcement, away fans will not be permitted in the final two rounds of fixtures amid the continued lifting of restrictions.

Reacting to the news, Premier League Chief Executive Richard Masters said: "It will be brilliant to see fans back. They have been hugely missed and the Premier League has not been the same without them. Their presence will ensure a fantastic finale to the end of our season.

"Although only a small number of home fans will be at our matches next week, this is an important step in our return to normality.

"We will continue to work with the Government and other authorities as our priority is to have full vibrant stadiums – including away supporters - from the start of next season. Only then will we get back to the real Premier League."
