Boris Johnson confirms election vote after Commons humiliation

Boris Johnson has said he is giving MPs the chance to vote for a general election after suffering a humiliating Commons defeat.

The 328, 301 defeat is the earliest loss for a PM since 1894.

Of that 21 were Tory rebels - despite Mr Johnson threatening them with the sack.

He told MPs “I can confirm that tonight I am tabling a motion under the fixed term Parliament act."

The Commons will get the chance to vote on repealing the Fixed Term Parliament's Act

Following his first defeat as Prime Minister, Mr Johnson said: “I don’t want an election, the public doesn’t want an election ... but if the House votes for this tomorrow the public will have to choose who will go to Brussels and sorts this out.”

Jeremy Corbyn indicated Labour will not back a general election tomorrow.

He said the PM wants to lay a motion for an election - "fine".

But he thundered: "Get the Bill through first - in order to take no deal off the table."

A Downing Street spokesman said: "The Chief Whip is speaking to those Tory MPs who did not vote with the Govt this evening. They will have the Tory whip removed."
