Boris Johnson confirms date that gyms in England can reopen

Gyms in England can reopen from April 12 at the earliest, Boris Johnson has announced.

People will be allowed to workout alone or with members of their household.

Swimming pools will also be allowed to reopen on this date.

The reopening of these facilities are part of Step 2 of the government's exit plan for England's lockdown.

Pubs and restaurants will also be allowed to reopen their outdoor areas from this date and takeaway alcohol can go back on sale.

And theme parks and zoos can reopen outdoor areas from the same date.

Mr Johnson said step two will begin “at least five weeks” after the first phase and no earlier than April 12, with an announcement at least seven days in advance.

He said: “If analysis of the latest data against the four tests requires a delay then this and subsequent steps will also be delayed to maintain the five-week gap.”

Non-essential retail and personal care, including hairdressers and nail salons, will open along with gyms while holiday lets can be used by individuals or household groups.

Mr Johnson told MPs: “We will begin to reopen our pubs and restaurants outdoors and honourable members will be relieved there will be no curfew and the Scotch egg debate will be over as there will be no requirement for alcohol to be accompanied by a substantial meal.”

Zoos, theme parks and drive-in cinemas will also reopen in this phase along with public libraries and community centres, Mr Johnson said.
