Boris Johnson will not face a criminal investigation into his relationship with Jennifer Arcuri when he was Mayor of London.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) revealed its long-awaited decision on whether the Prime Minister ’s links to the US tech entrepreneur should face a police inquiry.
The IOPC found “some evidence” that Johnson and Arcuri “may have been in an intimate relationship” when she attended three trade trips with him as London mayor.
It added: “If Mr Johnson was in an intimate relationship with Ms Arcuri, it would have been wise for him to have declared this as a conflict of interest.
“And a failure to do so could have constituted a breach of the broader Nolan principles contained within the GLA 2012 Code of Conduct.”
But overall, the watchdog found “it is unnecessary to criminally investigate Mr Johnson for misconduct in public office”.
The London Assembly will now resume a separate investigation into the pair which was paused when the police watchdog started its probe last year.
That investigation would not have the same powers as police, but could potentially call Mr Johnson and Ms Arcuri as witnesses.
A spokesman for Boris Johnson said: “We welcome the fact that this politically motivated complaint has been thrown out.
“Such vexatious claims of impropriety in office were untrue and unfounded.
“An independent review by the Government Internal Audit Agency similarly showed the claims made by the Labour Party were false.
“This was not a policing matter, and we consider this was a waste of police time.”
