Boris Johnson claims government is 'committed' to Leeds Manchester train link

Prime Minister Boris Johnson will claim the government is committed to improving rail links in the North - beginning with the Leeds to Manchester route.

Speaking in Sheffield tomorrow (September 13), he is also expected flag up projects for Leeds and West Yorkshire similar in nature to the Sheffield City Region Deal.

According to the PM, the government will also create a new Northern Powerhouse growth body with the aim of bringing together the major organisations working in the region.

He is expected to say: “It is time that we gave more people a say over the places where they live, and it is time that we gave you the proper ability to run things your way.

“We are going to maximise the power of the north.

"And we are going to make sure that it is people here who are in control over the things that matter to them."

A Chair will reportedly be appointed to head up the body, working closely with the Minister for the Northern Powerhouse.

In a previous speech in the county last week, Johnson also reiterated commitment to rail links to the North.

The first step will be the Manchester to Leeds route, with detailed plans published this autumn, following the review into HS2 - which aims to cut journey times and increase capacity.

The Prime Minister will conclude his speech by saying: “If we succeed in levelling up opportunity across our country, and if we truly put the power in your hands, then I believe you will do for the North – and for our whole country - what the railways did two centuries ago.

“That is the true potential of this Northern Powerhouse Partnership.

"And this is a Government that will back you to deliver it.”

Last week, an anti-Brexit rally in Leeds city centre heard speeches from MPs, MEPs and union members criticising the actions of Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

The Defend Democracy event took place on the steps of Leeds Art Gallery, on The Headrow, attracted a crowd of around 100 supporters.

There was a wide range of speakers, many of whom had already spoken at the Great Northern Stop Brexit Conference taking place in the city.

All of them argued against a No-Deal Brexit and slammed Prime Minister Boris Johnson's plan to suspend Parliament for five weeks.

Leeds North West MP Alex Sobel (Labour) was one of those who spoke at the rally.protesting the disgraceful actions of Boris Johnson."
