Boris Johnson calls on Tokyo Olympics chiefs to make decision amid coronavirus

Boris Johnson today urged Olympics chiefs to decide whether this summer's Games will do ahead amid the coronavirus crisis.

The sporting showpiece is due to take place in Tokyo from July.

But organisers face mounting calls to delay the spectacle because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Prime Minister today added his voice to demands for a final decision.

His spokesman said: “Athletes are facing significant uncertainty in the current environment.

“Their health and safety, alongside that of sports fans and officials due to work at the Games, must be absolutely paramount.

“We want the International Olympic Committee to make a definitive decision soon to bring clarity to all of those involved.”

Sports Minister Nigel Huddleston has already urged organisers to “seriously consider” postponing the Games.
