Boris Johnson branded afraid of Donald Trump as he ducks formal meeting at NATO

Boris Johnson has been accused of being afraid of Donald Trump as he ducked out of having a formal meeting with the US President.

Trump is in the UK for a two-day meeting of Nato leaders but hasn't scheduled a formal one-on-one meeting with the PM.

It's believed to be the first time a British Prime Minister hasn't arranged for bilateral talks with the US President during a UK trip.

Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab confirmed this morning there will be no Johnson-Trump bilateral.

During his appearance on BBC's Today programme, Nick Robinson said: "Just to confirm though, Boris Johnson is not having a bilateral meeting with the President of the United States, I think in fact making him the first British PM to behave that way."

Mr Raab replied: "No, I don’t think so Nick."

Raab said he would be having a one-to-one meeting with US secretary of state Mike Pompeo, adding "we're delighted to have the American President" and other leaders in the UK.

Jonathan Ashworth, Labour ’s Shadow Health Secretary, said: “Boris Johnson is running scared of being seen in public with his friend Donald Trump because he wants to cover up their plot against our NHS.

“With Trump in the White House and Johnson in Downing Street our NHS isn’t safe.

“The only thing Boris Johnson can do to reassure the thousands of people marching today is to discontinue the UK-US trade talks until Trump amends the negotiating objectives to exclude any reference to pharmaceuticals and patient data, and explicitly rule out US companies gaining access to our public services.”

However, during a press conference this morning Trump said he would see the PM during the course of his visit to the UK.

He added: "I have many meetings. I have meetings set up with lots of different countries."
