Boris Johnson is now the bookmakers favourite to succeed David Cameron following the Prime Minister’s resignation in the wake of the UK’s decision to leave the European Union.
Mr Johnson officially joined the Leave camp in February after he said he felt that Mr Cameron had failed in his attempts to negotiate a better deal for Britain in Brussels.
Shortly after his announcement, Mr Johnson overtook George Osborne as the bookmakers favourite to be the next Conservative leader, and has now secured his place with bookies offering odds of 4/5, 5/4, 1/1 and 8/11.
Any hope Mr Osborne once had to secure the role for himself will have been extinguished given the referendum outcome, with many in the Brexit camp now calling for his immediate resignation.
Most bookmakers have Home Secretary Theresa May as the second most likely to succeed Mr Cameron, and vocal leave campaigner – and Justice Secretary – Michael Gove trailing in third.
Mr Cameron announced he would stand down from his role and a new leader would be appointed by October after 51.9% of voters voted for the UK to leave the EU.
