Boris Johnson announcement: PM is not expected to unveil new Covid rules

Boris Johnson is not expected to announce new Covid restrictions for New Year after a briefing about Omicron.

The Prime Minister is holding talks with chief medical officer Professor Chris Whitty and chief scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance to consider the latest data on Monday morning.

No announcement is expected to come out of the meeting.

Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have all introduced Covid curbs on social mixing in the wake of the spread of the Omicron variant.

On Monday, nightclubs closed their doors in Wales as Covid restrictions tighten.

Mr Johnson has so far refused to implement similar measures in England.

Weddings and funerals are thought to be exempt from any new Covid laws that could be imposed at a later date as ministers look to avoid disruption “significant life events”,The Times reported.

Restrictions that were mulled over include bringing back the rule of six, restricting household mixing, closing indoors of pubs and restaurants and limiting numbers at events.

The Cabinet would need to back any legally binding restrictions.

Meanwhile, The Daily Telegraph reported schools were drawing up plans to send whole year groups home for remote learning if hit with Covid-related staff shortages after the Christmas holidays.

It is understood school closures are not being considered by ministers for January.

A source close to Education Secretary Nadhim Zahawi said: “The PM and Nadhim are fully committed to keeping schools open and there’s a shared commitment across Government to do so.

“Education is a top priority and school closures are not something being considered.”
