Boris Johnson has banned ministers from attending the World Economic Forum in Davos next month.

After leading his Conservative Party last week to its biggest election win since Margaret Thatcher's landslide victory of 1987 , Mr Johnson pledged to run a "people's government" that would deliver Brexit and repay the trust placed in him by voters in former strongholds of his Labour opponents.

The annual gathering in the Swiss ski resort attracts a global elite of politicians, business leads and celebrities.

"Our focus is on delivering for the people, not champagne with billionaires," a Downing Street source said.

Mr Johnson will also not attend the event.

The move echoes Donald Trump, who banned senior officials from attending Davos in 2017 shortly after he became president.

He also had to cancel his plan to attend the annual gathering of global economic leaders this year due to a government shutdown.

However, Mr Trump, who attended the event in 2018, plans to attend the annual event this year, a source said on Tuesday.

The World Economic Forum in the Swiss ski resort town of Davos is scheduled to run between January 21 and 24.
