Boris Johnson 'apologised to the Queen' for embarrassing her over Brexit

Boris Johnson made a grovelling apology to the Queen for embarrassing her over Brexit , it has been reported.

The Prime Minister contacted the monarch by phone from New York, where he had heard the news that his plan to shut down Parliament for five weeks in the run up to the Brexit deadline had been ruled unlawful by the Supreme Court.

A Palace source told the Mirror following the judgement that Her Majesty “will not be amused she is being dragged into the conversation.”

And Palace officials plotted ways to distance the monarch from the political row over Johnson’s plan to use a Queen’s speech to trigger an election, according to the Sunday Times.

The Mirror reported on Tuesday that Mr Johnson and the Queen had spoken on the phone in the immediate aftermath of the ruling.

At the time, a senior UK Government official would not comment on the exact timing of the call

Nor would they say whether he had apologised to the monarch.

"We never in any circumstances discuss the contents of conversations between the Prime Minister and her majesty," the official said.

But today a Number 10 source told the Sunday Times: “Are got on to the Queen as quickly as possible to say how sorry he was.”

Speaking to the BBC this morning, Mr Johnson refused to discuss the conversation.

He told Andrew Marr: "I am alas as you know forbidden from commenting on my conversations with Her Majesty."
