Boris Johnson announces two-metre social distancing rule will be relaxed

Boris Johnson has announced that the two-metre social distancing rule will be relaxed.

The measure was critically introduced at the start of the lockdown more than three months ago on March 23 due to coronavirus pandemic.

The Prime Minister said that the two-metre rule will be reduced to "1m plus" from July 4, with people advised to take other precautions such as wearing face coverings.

He advised that people should try and keep a two-metre distance but if not possible, one metre is allowed.

Mr Johnson announced the huge change as he addressed MPs in the Commons on Tuesday afternoon.

He also revealed that pubs, restaurants and hairdressers can all reopen as well as places of worship from July 4.

Two households will also be allowed to meet indoors and stay overnight, with no limit on numbers providing it is just the two households.

Mr Johnson said the changes allows people to see more of their loved ones and get the economy back up and running.

But he continues to warn that the government "will not hesitate to apply the brakes" at regional, or even national, level if an outbreak becomes apparant.

"Today we can say, our long, national hibernation is becoming to come to an end," Mr Johnson added well adding that "caution" does remain.
