The Prime Minister Boris Johnson tonight explained his plan for reopening schools from the coronavirus lockdown.
In his televised address to the nation the PM covered many topics including some immediate changes to restrictions on work and activities in the country.
But many parents will have been anxiously waiting to see what his plan is for schools, which have remained closed under current lockdown measures for seven weeks.
Many families have been forced into very difficult circumstances because of the measures including home schooling.
In his speech, Mr Johnson spelt out his plan for reopening schools in the country.
He said that if things go to plan and the number of new infections remains low, he intends to start a phased return for primary schools from the start of June.
He said this would be part of "step two" of his plan.
Mr Johnson said: "In step two – at the earliest by June 1 – after half term – we believe we may be in a position to begin the phased reopening of shops and to get primary pupils back into schools, in stages, beginning with reception, Year 1 and Year 6."
The situation is different and less clear for secondary schools, where exams have already been called off for many.
The Prime Minister said: "Our ambition is that secondary pupils facing exams next year will get at least some time with their teachers before the holidays.
"And we will shortly be setting out detailed guidance on how to make it work in schools and shops and on transport."
