Boris Johnson announces new Covid-19 rules for weddings with number of allowed guests lowered

Boris Johnson confirmed new rule changes for weddings due to rising coronavirus rates.

The Prime Minister confirmed the number of guests permitted to attend a sit-down wedding reception meal has been cut, as he addressed MPs in Parliament to announce new restrictions on socialising, which include a nationwide 10pm curfew on pubs, bars and restaurants.

Wedding receptions were banned in March when the first coronavirus lockdown was implemented, but restrictions were loosened on August 15, to allow 'sit-down meal' wedding celebrations for up to 30 people.

On Tuesday September 22, Mr Johnson announced the rules have changed again. From Thursday, September 24, wedding receptions will be limited to sit-down meals of up to 15 people. Up to 30 can still attend funerals.

Mr Johnson said he expects the restrictions to be in place for "perhaps six months."

He told Parliament that "No British Government would wish to stifle our freedoms in the ways we have found necessary today" but said the country should take comfort in the commitment to keep schools, universities, places of worship open.

He added: "It now falls to each of us and every one of us to remember the basics; wash our hands, cover our faces, observe social distancing and follow the tules. Then we can fight back against this virus, shelter our economy from this virus, protect our most vulnerable in care homes and hospitals, our NHS, and save many more lives."
