Boris Johnson and his wife have announced they are in the process of divorcing.

The former foreign secretary and his wife, Marina Wheeler, issued a joint statement saying they had separated some time ago.

They made the announcement after The Sun revealed on its front page the Conservative MP and lawyer, both 54, were no longer living together.

The paper said they split after she accused him of cheating.

“Several months ago, after 25 years of marriage, we decided it was in our best interests to separate,” their statement said.

“We have subsequently agreed to divorce and that process is under way.

“As friends we will continue to support our four children in the years ahead. We will not be commenting further”.

Mr Johnson resigned as foreign secretary in July after disagreeing with Theresa May over her Brexit plans.

He is currently the bookmakers’ favourite to succeed her as prime minister.

The Independent has launched its #FinalSay campaign to demand that voters are given a voice on the final Brexit deal.
