Boris Johnson announces date for return of full crowds in England

Boris Johnson has paved the way for spectators to fully return to sporting events in England after confirming that social distancing rules will be scrapped from July 19.

Fixtures have been at either zero or reduced capacity since March last year due to the pandemic.

However, due to a significant rollout of the coronavirus vaccine, stadiums are poised to be at full capacity for the first time in 16 months.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday afternoon, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: “We will move away from legal restrictions and allow people to make their own informed decisions about how to manage the virus.

“From step four we will remove all legal limits on the numbers meeting indoors and outdoors.

"We will allow all businesses to reopen, including nightclubs, we will lift the limit on named visitors to care homes and the numbers of people attending concerts, theatre, and sports events.”

Fans in Wales are now awaiting a full update from the Welsh Government.

A limited number of Swansea City and Newport County supporters attended the home leg of their respective play-off semi-final matches in May.

Wales' Euro 2020 warm-up fixture with Albania at Cardiff City Stadium was also used as a pilot event while 8,200 supporters were permitted to attend Wales' rugby fixture with Canada at Principality Stadium on Saturday.
