Boris Johnson and Theresa May pictured partying together as they bury the hatchet at Tory victory celebration

Boris Johnson and Theresa May appeared to have buried the hatchet as they were photographed celebrating the Tories' crushing election victory.

The two Conservative heavyweights seemed to put past differences behind them during an evening reception in Westminster after the party secured a majority of 80 in Thursday's poll.

The Prime Minister and his predecessor were spotted apparently sharing a joke at the event as MPs toasted to success with "fine English sparking wine".

Eddie Hughes, MP for Walsall North, posted the image on his social media, adding: "What a Party. Toasting £GE2019 success with fine English sparkling wine... Here's to a great 2020."

Mr Johnson served as foreign secretary in Mrs May's government before quitting and becoming a vocal critic of her Brexit plans.

Despite his contribution to her eventual departure from the top job, the re-elected Maidenhead MP backed her successor during the campaign.

The reception came after Mr Johnson welcomed more than 100 newly-elected colleagues to the House of Commons, many of whom had secured victory in former Labour strongholds in the Midlands and North of England.

Former Brexit secretary David Davis said: "The substantive thing that he had to say was that we have to justify their trust. He got a lot of cheers for that.

"He said it has changed our party - and for the better."

Backbencher Mark Francois said: "He said we have got to work for all corners of the United Kingdom.

"He said we have got to respect those people who voted for us, particularly for the first time.

"It was very upbeat and it went down very well."
