Boris Johnson and staff seen drinking in garden when mixing limited to 2 people

Brazen Boris Johnson has been pictured enjoying wine and cheese alongside his wife and more than a dozen staff in the Downing Street garden during lockdown.

It comes a week after No10 claimed the PM and his colleagues were purely "working outside" - and ruled out a social gathering.

It is the latest damaging image to enrage the British public following a string of selfish Tory partying allegations while strict coronavirus restrictions were in place.

The Prime Minister, his partner Carrie Johnson and his aides can be seen relaxing with glasses together.

They appear to be observing little social distancing during the "work meeting" minutes before a press conference - where he again ordered people not to meet in groups.

The new photo comes after last week's denial from No10, who stressed that a social event took place on May 15 2020.

In the image obtained by the Guardian, 19 people are pictured talking in groups across terrace and lawn at Downing Street on that date.

Bottles of wine are seen on the table where the PM sat with his wife, with large chunks of cheese on a plate close by.

Mrs Johnson appears to be cradling new son Wilfred, who was born a month before. Brits were told at the time that social mixing between households was not allowed.

Guidance was given that in-person meetings should only take place if “absolutely necessary”.

In a statement to the Mirror tonight, No10 continue to stress there was no wrong-doing.

A Downing Street spokesperson said: "As we said last week, work meetings often take place in the Downing Street garden in the summer months. On this occasion there were staff meetings following a No10 press conference.

"Downing Street is the Prime Minister’s home as well as his workplace. The Prime Minister’s wife lives in No10 and therefore also legitimately uses the garden."

But Labour deputy leader Angela Rayner said the latest photo was “a slap in the face of the British public”.

She told the publication: “The Prime Minister consistently shows us he has no regard for the rules he puts in place for the rest of us.

"Alleged drinking and partying late into the evening when the rest of us were only recently getting one daily walk.

"Boris Johnson’s government is run with the attitude that it is one rule for them, and another for everyone else. He is totally unfit to lead our country.”

On the same day as the photo was taken, then health secretary Matt Hancock spoke to the nation again demanding they followed the rules.

He pleaded with the public to obey the government regardless of the warm early summer weather.

The Guardian report that sources claim "about 20 staff drank wine and spirits and ate pizza following a press conference on that day, some in offices inside No 10 and others going into the garden".

Some staff, the insider stated, stayed drinking until late into the evening.

In response, the PM's official spokesperson said last week: “In the summer months Downing Street staff regularly use the garden for some meetings.

"On 15 May 2020 the prime minister held a series of meetings throughout the afternoon, including briefly with the then health and care secretary and his team in the garden following a press conference.

“The prime minister went to his residence shortly after 7pm. A small number of staff required to be in work remained in the Downing Street garden for part of the afternoon and evening.”

Adam Wagner, a leading authority on Covid regulations, said on Twitter this evening that he thought the photo wasn't against the law.

He said: “I had a look at this earlier - I’m doubtful it was against the law (though it may have been against guidance).”
