Boris Johnson and Nigel Farage replaced by ice sculptures for Channel 4 climate change debate

Channel 4 is set to replace Boris Johnson and Nigel Farage with ice sculptures after the pair refused to attend their leaders' debate on climate change.

The broadcaster is dedicating its hour-long programme at 7pm to climate change.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon, Lib Dem leader Jo Swinson, Green Party co-leader Sian Berry, and Plaid Cymru leader Adam Price are all due to take part. Both Conservative leader Mr Johnson and Brexit Party leader Mr Farage were invited to attend but they refused.

Programme editor Ben de Pear said ahead of the debate that "the invitation remains open to all the leaders who want to debate climate change". But shortly before the programme went to air Channel 4 News tweeted a clip of the set with the podiums which would have been occupied by the respective leaders filled instead with melting ice sculptures.

In the tweet they added: "These two ice sculptures - which represent the emergency on planet earth - will take the place of Boris Johnson and Nigel Farage tonight after they declined our invitation to attend a party leaders' #ClimateDebate".

The Brexit Party had no mention of climate change in its manifesto.

The Conservative Party had a list of environment and energy pledges , including reaching net-zero by 2050 and investing £6.3bn to improve the energy efficiency of 2.2m disadvantaged homes.

During election polling the environment has been listed as being more important than at any time since 1990.

It has been ranked above economy, education, and immigration and only behind Brexit, health and crime, according to Ipsos Mori.
