Boris Johnson and Leo Varadkar say they can 'see pathway' to Brexit deal

Leo Varadkar and Boris Johnson have concluded a marathon Brexit meeting in Wirral.

The two leaders met for over three hours, when they were only scheduled to meet for about half an hour, and significant progress towards a Brexit deal has been made.

The "behind closed doors" meeting at a secret venue - but the Irish Mirror tracked the leaders down to Thornton Manor, Wirral, Merseyside - was attended by senior officials from both governments.

Another high octane meeting is scheduled for this morning between the highest-ranked negotiators of the UK and EU’s Brexit negotiating teams, UK Brexit Secretary, and EU Chief Brexit Negotiator, Michel Barnier.

The Taoiseach and Prime Minister released the following statement following their meeting this evening.

“The Taoiseach and Prime Minister have had a detailed and constructive discussion.

“Both continue to believe a deal is in everybody’s interest.

“They agreed that they could see a pathway to a possible deal.

“Their discussions concentrated on the challenges of customs and consent.

“They also discussed the potential to strengthen bilateral relations, including on Northern Ireland.

“They agreed to reflect further on their discussions and that officials would continue to engage intensively on them.
