Boris Johnson and fiancee announce birth of son

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his fiancee, Carrie Symonds, have announced the birth of a son.

Ms Symonds gave birth to "a healthy baby boy at a London hospital this morning", their spokeswoman said.

The spokeswoman added that both mother and baby were doing well.

Mr Johnson returned to work earlier this week after recovering from COVID-19, which saw him placed in an intensive care unit for several days.

Ms Symonds also had coronavirus symptoms but self-isolated and did not require hospitalisation during her pregnancy.

Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab will stand in for Mr Johnson during Wednesday's Prime Minister's Questions during a virtual parliament.

The couple announced in late February that Ms Symonds was expecting and the couple were engaged.

The child is Ms Symonds' first, while Mr Johnson has four children with his former wife, Marine Wheeler, and another child with property developer Helen Macintyre.

More to come.
