Boris Johnson and Carrie Symonds announce name of baby - and this is who he is named after

Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his fiancé Carrie Symonds have announced the name of their baby boy.

The couple welcomed their first child together on Wednesday (April 29) just days after Mr Johnson returned to work.

The "healthy baby boy" was born at a London hospital and now they have revealed his name.

Announcing the news on Instagram alongside picture of her cradling her son on Instagram on Saturday, Ms Symonds said: "Introducing Wilfred Lawrie Nicholas Johnson born on 29.04.20 at 9am.

"Thank you so, so much to the incredible NHS maternity team at UCLH that looked after us so well. I couldn't be happier. My heart is full."

Ms Symonds also explained the reasoning behind the newborn's name.

He is named Wilfred after Boris' grandfather, Lawrie Carries grandfather and Nicholas after Dr Nick Price and Dr Nick Hart – the two doctors that saved Boris' life last month.

Mr Johnson, 55, returned to work on Monday this week after recovering from coronavirus.

The prime minister was discharged from St Thomas' hospital in London, where he spent three nights in intensive care, on April 12.

He then went to stay at Chequers with Ms Symonds, 32, to continue his recovery.

The couple announced the news that they were engaged and expecting a baby in 'early summer' at the end of February.
