Boris Becker drops claim of diplomatic immunity from bankruptcy - and faces losing £200k of tennis trophies

Former world tennis number one Boris Becker has dropped his claim to have diplomatic immunity from bankruptcy.

The three-time Wimbledon champion had argued his appointment as a Central African Republic attaché meant he could not be subjected to bankruptcy.

But he abandoned his case at a hearing in London on Monday, and his bankruptcy has been extended indefinitely by a judge.

Mr Becker's withdrawal from the legal action means a planned auction of trophies and memorabilia, which was previously put on hold, will now go ahead.

The 50-year-old German was initially declared bankrupt in June 2017 but Mr Becker claimed diplomatic immunity.

The former tennis star, who did not attend the hearing, has been warned to co-operate with bankruptcy trustees as they take on the case.

At a hearing in June this year, lawyers acting for the trustees claimed Mr Becker had not co-operated fully with them by failing to provide "full and accurate information" about his assets.

Those assets including two German properties, a property in London, an interest in three Mercedes dealerships and various tennis trophies and memorabilia.

Mr Becker was granted an injunction at a later hearing in June to block the auction of trophies and memorabilia worth an estimated £200,000.

This will now go ahead, and the items for sale include a certificate commemorating his men's doubles gold medal win with Michael Stich in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.
