Borgue Community Council brings residents together with festive living advent

With so many of the regular community events cancelled over the festive period, Borgue Community Council brought local residents together in a slightly less conventional way.

Volunteers throughout the parish were invited to take part in a living advent calendar, with each participant responsible for one day of advent.

The challenge was to create an installation at roadsides and gardens for the community to enjoy.

Displays featuring inventions sprang up day by day around the parish from Senwick to Kirkandrews and from Borgue to Carrick – to the delight of local residents.

Installations included a giant snowman, a full suit of festive armour, the Gruffalo, light installations, an upcycled tyre wreath complete with fairy lights, floral displays and, at Knockbrex crossroads, an angel, to name but a few.

The advent concluded with a live streamed storytime for the children of the parish with Mrs Christmas complete with elf.

A final surprise came on Christmas Day with a beautiful light installation depicting the baby Jesus in his manger.

Borgue Community Council secretary Nicola Sanderson said: “A great many residents had expressed their delight at watching the creation unfold throughout December, both around the village or via social media.

“It was a reminder that even when communities can not physically meet we can still come together in a meaningful way.

“Sharing each creation brought people a little hope and happiness at a time when our usual festivities were sorely missed.

“The community council would like to thank all those who took part in what is a heart warming demonstration of community spirit as well as festive cheer.”

The whole advent can be viewed on Borgue Community Council’s website and the Borgue community facebook page.
