Jerry Falwell Jr. said he was bored with Liberty University and that watching his wife had sex with another guy wasn't how he got his thrills.
The 58-year-old son of Liberty University founder Jerry Falwell told The Washington Post Tuesday that he stepped down from the school his dad started almost 50 years ago. He reportedly sent his letter of resignation at 11 p.m. Monday, claiming he had noting left to accomplish.
"I was starting to get bored," the former school president claimed.
The university quickly accepted Falwell's resignation from the board of directors, the Post reported.
Falwell also said he didn't want his wife Becky's affair with a Miami pool boy to become a distraction for the Lynchburg, Virginia, Christian school, which looks down on that sort of thing.
Giancarlo Granda, 29, told Reuters in a story published Monday that he'd been having sex with Falwell's missus since 2012 and that the Liberty University bigwig liked to watch.
Falwell reportedly called the Reuters story "90% false" and Becky said her husband did not oversee her infidelities with Granda.
Falwell, who endorsed President Donald Trump in the 2016 election, is credited with clearing a path for other evangelicals to overlook the Republican candidate's own indiscretions and support his candidacy. He told The Washington Post that he blames his political affiliation to Trump for some of his professional troubles now, but didn't explain how exactly. According to Falwell, Trump asked him to become the nation's secretary of Education and he declined.
The lawyer and administrator has been on paid leave since posting a social media photo of himself and a woman who isn't his wife imbibing on a boat with their pants unbuttoned. Falwell assumed control of Liberty University when his father died in 2007.
