Borderlands 4 is now available for pre-order, and the controversy surrounding its pricetag has come to an end. Or has it?
After Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford's controversial comments last month about the base game potentially being $80, saying "if you’re a real fan, you’ll find a way to make it happen," the title has ended up getting the current industry standard price of $69.99 USD. But then there are the other editions.
Borderlands 4's Deluxe Edition is priced at $99.99, adding a weapon skin, plus four unique areas, new gear and weapons, new cosmetics, and more. But then there's the Super Deluxe Edition, which many are scoffing at for its eye-popping $129.99 price.
Setting anything at twice the price of the base edition is going to cause a commotion every time, but when you look at the contents of what's included, it's possible that the Super Deluxe may pay for itself if and only if you know you're in it for the long haul.
The Super Deluxe version includes everything in the Deluxe, plus the Vault Hunter pack and Ornate Order pack. The Vault Hunter pack is the big one, as it will include two new playable Vault Hunters as post-launch DLC, two new story packs, two new map regions, new gear and weapons, and new cosmetics. The Ornate Order pack also includes some additional skins and cosmetics.
For hardcore Borderlands fans who know they will be playing it for some time to come, the Super Deluxe Edition is likely worth it. But I feel like most will hold off on it until they play the base game and see if it's worth coming back for more, at which point the bundles will be available to purchase separately as add-on content.
The fact that the base game is set at $69.99 is a win for gamers who were worried about the jump to $80, as with Mario Kart World and some other titles coming out soon. While the $130 edition will likely disappoint many, it remains optional. But I can't help but wonder what effect, if any, the outcry to Pitchford's previous comments may have had on the game's price tag.
