‘Borderlands 3’ Says You Should Be Farming Cash Ahead Of The ‘Cartels’ Event

There are three more days in Borderlands 3’s “Make it Rain” event which doubles cash drops from most enemies, allowing you to rack up millions because…why, exactly?

For a while now, cash has been fundamentally useless in Borderlands 3. You need it to max our your ammo and vault space, but after that, there’s no use for it, and the more you gain, the more you lose in death (when I hit 100 million with FL4K after Graveward farming, I’d lose 10 million per death).

But it appears that’s about to change. Gearbox hinted that cash would play a role in the upcoming, relatively substantive “Cartels” event, and now Randy Pitchford himself is chiming in that yes, you really should be farming cash:

The problem is that in the current context of Borderlands 3, I have no idea what constitutes a large amount of cash ahead of this event. Like, a few million? Ten million? A hundred million? We don’t know what we’re using it for, though theories include bribes to pay off Cartel members, though really we have no idea what this event is going to be like past pursuing bounty targets and going to a new zone, similar to the Halloween event months ago.

As for farming cash, I haven’t figured out the best way to do it yet, but there are a few pieces to the puzzle.

  • This event is increasing cash from normal, badass and Anointed enemies, but not bosses.
  • The Borderlands Science minigame has a 100% cash boost that can essentially be permanent.
  • There’s an artifact that gives you 100% more cash and better drop rate luck at the cost of health.
  • There was a grenade with the deluxe edition of the game that gave you cash when damaging enemies.

For my “cash runs,” all I’ve really been doing is farming Mecha Jack, the final boss of the Moxxi’s Heist DLC in the VIP Tower. While he doesn’t drop all that much cash himself, I can kill him in 45-60 seconds with most characters and then you get access to his “treasure room” where this is always something like 3-3.5 million in cash no the ground. I’m not sure if this is affected by the boosts I mentioned (I don’t actually think it is), but it’s a very good cash and occasional loot farm.

Remember, your cash pool is not shared across characters, so if you want to do Cartels across multiple characters, you should spread the wealth around. I have something like 80 million in cash on Zane but only like 4 million on Moze, so I have some work to do there.

Anyway, get to farming. We’ll find out why soon.
