Border Congressman slams impeachment proceedings, calls for bipartisan action

Congressman calls impeachment proceedings against Secretary Mayorkas "unserious".

In a recent interview, Congressman Gabe Vasquez, a Democrat from New Mexico, shared his thoughts on the impeachment proceedings initiated by his Republican colleagues against Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas. Representing 180 miles of the U.S.-Mexico border, Vasquez highlighted the complex nature of border issues, dismissing the proposed impeachment as unserious and unlikely to gain traction. He emphasized the need for bipartisan collaboration to address the humanitarian crisis at the border, expressing concerns that these proceedings would hinder progress.

Vasquez pointed out that Republicans are capitalizing on immigration as a hot political issue leading up to the upcoming elections. As a representative of a border district, he, along with other Democrats and colleagues from border states, understands the needs of their communities and the urgency of finding solutions to the ongoing crisis. Funding for Customs and Border Protection, as well as support for national organizations assisting asylum seekers, were stressed as essential aspects of these solutions.

While acknowledging that immigration is a genuine issue, Vasquez highlighted the importance of taking the time to carefully consider reforms and changes to the asylum process. He suggested that the State Department could play a more active role in combating human trafficking and educating migrants and communities in both Mexico and the United States. Moreover, he commended the administration's efforts in working with Mexico, Central American countries, and others to tackle the current crisis.

Regarding Senate discussions on asylum reform, Vasquez maintained that he couldn't comment on specific proposals until they were presented. He stressed the need for comprehensive immigration reform and cautioned against rushing into policy changes. He expressed frustration with the lack of productive dialogue between the administration and Hispanic members of the U.S. House.

Addressing his Republican colleague, Tony Gonzalez from Texas, Vasquez underscored their ability to find common ground on issues such as border technology and security funding. He highlighted the importance of collaboration and bipartisanship, citing the establishment of the Southwest Bipartisan Caucus as an example.

In conclusion, Congressman Gabe Vasquez emphasized the need for thoughtful and inclusive approaches to addressing the border crisis. While acknowledging the concerns and genuine issues raised by Republicans, he expressed reservations about some proposed policies that he deemed antithetical to American values. His message echoed the call for bipartisan cooperation to effectively address the complex challenges at the U.S.-Mexico border.
