Borat sequel coming to Amazon Prime just before the US presidential election

A sequel to Borat is heading to Amazon ahead of the US presidential election.

Sacha Baron Cohen will reprise his role as the iconic titular character for the film, which will be released by the streaming giant on Prime Video in 40 countries and territories, according to Deadline.

The Borat sequel is the first major film to have been made during the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown in the US.

It is said that it filmed after an agreement with unions, with Baron Cohen working with minimal personnel and crew.

According to the publication, Baron Cohen placed himself in life-threatening situations akin to his work on the first Borat film, follow-up Bruno, and his television series Who Is America, prompting him to wear a bulletproof vest while filming.

It is reported that it was initially planned for the film to have a theatrical release but due to the ongoing pandemic restrictions and Baron Cohen's desire to have the film released before election day, it was decided that the Borat sequel should release on Amazon.

On Tuesday, November 3, 2020, President Donald Trump will take on Democrat nominee and former Vice President Joe Biden in the hope of winning a second term in the White House, but current polls show Biden could oust him.

The first Borat was a huge box office success and managed to bring home $262million for its studio Fox, which has now been taken over by Disney.

Amazon Prime Studios will also be releasing a number of other films later this year, including the Sound of Metal starring British actor Riz Ahmed and Oscar-winning actress Regina King's directorial debut One Night in Miami.

Meanwhile, Baron Cohen can also be seen on Netflix in October as he stars in historical crime drama The Trial of the Chicago 7.

The film is directed by Oscar-winning screenwriter Aaron Sorkin and also stars recent Emmy-winners Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Jeremy Strong, along with Oscar-winning actors Eddie Redmayne and Mark Rylance.
