A few more details about the reported sequel to Sacha Baron Cohen’s hit 2006 comedy Borat have emerged, including its obscenely long title.
The original film, which saw Cohen inhabit his Ali G Show character of Kazakhstani naïf Borat Sagdiyev, is known widely by its abbreviated title, but in fact had a wordy title of its own (Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan).
And, according to a filing with the Writer’s Guild of America (which has since been removed from its website), the sequel will be titled: Borat: Gift of Pornographic Monkey to Vice Premiere Mikhael Pence to Make Benefit Recently Diminished Nation of Kazakhstan.
As well as being a joke at the expense of the much-criticised US vice president Mike Pence, the title could in fact hint at the premise for the film’s plotline.
While the original Borat focussed on the ill-fated attempt by Cohen’s character to arrange a wedding with former Baywatch star Pamela Anderson – as well as his efforts to familiarise himself with Western culture – the new title promises a more political edge.
As per The Film Stage, the WGA filing credits Cohen as screenwriter alongside collaborators Anthony Hines, Dan Swimer, Peter Baynham, Erica Rivinoja, Dan Mazer, Jena Friedman, and Lee Kern.
In the vein of the original Borat, the new film is expected to incorporate unscripted interactions between an in-character Cohen and members of the public or well-known personalities.
Prior to the report in Collider that a Borat sequel would be making its way to screens later this year, rumours of another Borat project were already in the air, after Cohen was spotted filming while dressed as his famous character.
Cohen’s 2018 series Who is America? saw the comedian and actor interview a number of politicians and celebrities, including Bernie Sanders, OJ Simpson and former vice president Dick Cheney.
