Bopanna-Dodig pair moves into US open third round

NEW YORK: Rohan Bopanna and Ivan Dodig, the 13th seeds, put out Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech and Monaco’s Hugo Nys in an up-and-down feature to move into the third-round of the US Open.

The Indo-Croatian pairing came through 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 in 1 hour and 56 minutes.

The 13th seeds jumped to a 3-0 lead in the opening set before their opponents levelled scores. They then won the last three games to seize the early advantage.

Rinderknech and Nys, going for broke, did better in the second set in which they kept pace with the more seasoned pairing before pulling one back.

Bopanna and Dodig, cheered on by a sizeable audience that had a fair smattering of Indian fans, converted the three break-point chances they had in their near two-hours in the middle.

After striking twice in the opening set, they broke in the seventh game of the decider, before Bopanna held serve to open up a 5-3 advantage.

Dodig served out the match in the tenth game to set up a third-round meeting with the fourth-seeded duo of American Rajeev Ram and his long-standing British partner Joe Sallsbury.
