Boozy MSs who drank in the Senedd after the alcohol ban came in get top roles on Welsh Tory frontbench

Two politicians who drank alcohol in the Welsh Parliament tea room, days after a ban on serving it in pubs took effect have been handed top roles in the newly elected Conservative Group.

Paul Davies, who quit as group leader in January after he was seen drinking, will be the new spokesman on economy.

Clwyd West MS Darren Millar, who was also one of the politicians caught drinking has already returned to the role of chip whip, will also speak on constitutional matters and north Wales. Woman who served the alcohol told she may face prosecution

Tory Senedd leader Andrew RT Davies has also announced some new faces amongst his top team. The team include:

  • Peter Fox - finance matters
  • Natasha Asghar - transport/technology
  • Sam Rowlands - local government
  • Laura Jones - education
  • Russell George - health
  • Mark Isherwood - social justice.
  • Janet Finch-Saunders - climate change
  • Altaf Hussein - equalities (and deputy whip)

  • Tom Gifford - culture, tourism and sport
  • James Evans - mental health, wellbeing and mid Wales
  • Samuel Kurtz - rural affairs and Welsh language
  • Joel James - social partnership
  • Gareth Davies - social services.

The Conservatives won 16 of the 60 Senedd seats on 6 May, meaning they make up the second-largest group in Cardiff Bay, behind Labour's 30 seats but beating Plaid Cymru's tally of 13.

Andrew RT Davies said: "After our best ever Welsh election result, this is a new team brimming with energy and ideas to tackle the big challenges Wales faces as we come out of the pandemic.

"The Welsh Conservatives have delivered a fresh team to the Senedd and I'm excited to see a new shadow cabinet full of talent and expertise from outside parliament enter the political fray in Wales."

He pledged the team would be "holding Labour to account, putting forward positive policy alternatives as we build a real alternative and ensuring that, through strong opposition, we deliver better government".
