Boozy carer too drunk to look after patient during day out at Celtic Park

A carer has been rapped after getting boozed up during a day out at Celtic Park with a patient.

Sarahjane Mullen downed so many drinks she was unable to care for the person she was employed to look after while working at a brain injury rehab centre.

The Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) blasted her behaviour in a report last week.

It explained: "By presenting as intoxicated at a football match you attended with a service user you have failed to act in accordance with the standards expected of you as a registered worker.

"Social services workers are expected to work in a safe and effective way. You have failed to do this in becoming intoxicated to the point you were unable to carry out your duties."

Mullen worked as a support worker at Murdostoun Brain Injury Rehabilitation and Neurological Care Centre in Newmains, Wishaw when she accompanied the service user to the Celtic v Hearts match on May 19 last year.

The pair watched Celtic win 2-1 in the last game of the season in the Scottish Premiership, when she downed so much booze she was incapable of looking after her charge.

The report added: "The behaviour represents a breach of trust and went against the alcohol policy of your employer. The level of intoxication rendered you unable to provide proper care."

Mullen was issued with a warning, which will remain on her registration for nine months.
