Boozed-up Cumnock man threatened wife

A man ended up in custody for three weeks after threatening his wife, writes Edwin Lawrence.

Mark Reid, 32, had drunk two-and-a-half bottles of Buckfast, Ayr Sheriff Court heard.

And Sheriff John Montgomery told him: “You clearly have a problem with drink and drugs.

“I hope that the time you have spent on remand has made you realise it.

“Under the influence of drink and drugs, you are a nasty individual.”

Reid admitted his threatening behaviour, on February 25 in the family home at Holmburn Road, Netherthird, Cumnock.

He had fallen asleep on the couch, but when he woke, around 10.30pm, he started shouting and swearing at wife Michelle.

Defence lawyer Robert Logan said Reid was a hard-working man with his own painting and decorating business.

But he had got into the habit of binge drinking, during 2018, and this resulted in domestic incidents.

Mr Logan said Mrs Reid phoned her mother-in-law, when Reid kicked off.

But she couldn’t come round, as she was looking after the couple’s baby.

Mrs Reid then phoned her own parents to come and get her and the older children.Reid called the police himself - and this led to his own arrest.

Mr Logan: “He is clear it was out of order. She wants him back - sober.”

Sheriff John Montgomery put Reid on a supervision order for 15 months.

He is obliged to attend drug and alcohol counselling during that time.

He must also complete 120 hours of unpaid work within six months.

Sheriff Montgomery told Reid: “The money you spend on drink and drugs would be better spent on your wife and chidren.”
