Booze-fuelled Scots islander broke into neighbour's home thinking it was his own

A man was so drunk he broke into his neighbours' home and slept on the couch.

Michael Mitchell downed a bottle of vodka before breaking into the flat above his own in Rothesay, on the Isle of Bute.

When the couple found him sprawled on their sofa, Mitchell threatened to attack them.

The 40-year-old pled guilty to behaving in a threatening or abusive way at Greenock Sheriff Court yesterday.

Prosecutor Lindy Scaife said the couple who live there returned to find Mitchell sleeping on the couch.

She explained: "They woke him up and asked what he was doing in the house, he instantly became aggressive towards them and told them to get out what he thought was his home.

"He then challenged the men to a fight, shouting, 'I'll take you both in a fight, this is my home, you will need to get out'.

"He continued to issue threats of violence towards the witnesses, not allowing any of them to leave."

Police were contacted and Mitchell, who had caused £200 of damage and injured his hand by breaking the lock, was taken to hospital for treatment.

Solicitor Gerry Keenan said Mitchell had stopped taking anti-psychotic medication at the time, heard voices in his head, and drank alcohol in a bid to self-medicate.

The lawyer added: "He consumed a bottle of vodka and, such was his state of intoxication, he went up one flight of stairs more than he should've done.

"He thought he was on his own landing and headed into the house that he thought was his and, in so doing, damaged the door and injured his hand.

"He fell asleep on what he believed to be his own sofa. He felt intimidated and threatened and acted in that manner."

Sheriff Michael Higgins jailed Mitchell for 18 weeks, reduced from 24 weeks due to his guilty plea.
