Boots shoppers waiting more than an hour in 100,000 strong virtual queue

More than 100,000 Boots customers are waiting in a virtual queue as the company looks to limit the amount of people on its website.

People looking to shop online are greeted with a screen telling them they are facing a wait of more than an hour.

The message when clicking on the website reads: "Hello, you're in a virtual queue.

"We're limiting the amount of people shopping the website to help ensure everyone gets what they need. Please do not close this page."

With people across the UK looking to stock up on essentials and medicine during the coronavirus outbreak, more and more are taking to online shopping to get what they need.

However, people are still able to click on the repeat prescription delivery service and the link for finding emergency eye care hubs.

A spokesperson for Boots told Devon Live : "Boots.com is currently seeing very, very high demand so to make sure we can continue to take orders for essential healthcare and toiletry products we have temporarily introduced a queuing system onto the site for customers.

"We are prioritising the processing and shipping of essential items on Boots.com and so we are also limiting sales on our site of some products.

"We are doing everything possible to manage essential deliveries to our customers and we thank them for their patience, and all our warehouse colleagues for their support at this time.

"We are not planning for this to be a long term issue and believe that we should return to a more normal place as soon as possible."

On the waiting screen, Boots also tells customers about how it is supporting the NHS by opening test centres for NHS staff. The high street chemist recently announced it was opening drive-thru test centres for staff.

Seb James, managing director of Boots UK and ROI, said: “I am extremely proud that Boots is supporting COVID-19 testing for NHS workers. Boots has been at the heart of UK healthcare for 171 years and has always come forward to support the community in times of need.

“We will work with the NHS to recruit trained professionals – both Boots colleagues and from the wider community. I am sure there will be many trained healthcare clinicians and students, who will step forward to support our dedicated NHS colleagues.

“Locations are being defined but will be spread across the UK; they will not however be in Boots stores, allowing our colleagues to focus on supporting our customers and patients.”
