Boots' parent firm announces new information chief who will lead digital innovations

Boots' parent company has announced the appointment of a new global chief information officer who will be responsible for IT operations across all the firm's divisions.

Francesco Tinto will also become senior vice president of Walgreens Boots Alliance, which he joins after 17 years with Kraft Heinz Company and Kraft Foods.

Among his tasks in the role will be to deliver new technology and digital innovations for customers, which includes a project with Microsoft to make care more accessible and affordable.

Walgreens announced in January it was partnering with Microsoft to develop new healthcare technology, using the tech giant's innovations alongside its own customer reach and expertise.

Mr Tinto said: "I am very glad to be joining Walgreens Boots Alliance at a time when technology and innovation are more important than ever to the company’s success.

"I am looking forward to working with my highly-talented team around the world to ensure WBA is at the forefront in this critical area of the business."

Mr Tinto will take over from Anthony Roberts, who is retiring from the position to focus on non-executive roles outside the company, although he will be retained in an advisory capacity.

In a joint statement, Ornella Barra and Alex Gourlay, co-chief operating officers, said: "We are deeply thankful to Anthony for building a world-class IT function, which has been integral to our company’s success.

"We are also thrilled to welcome Francesco, who brings an exceptional background and experience to this role.”

The move has come after Boots UK confirmed last week around 60 jobs were at risk as the company prepared to move its IT desk overseas.

This formed part of Walgreens' $1 billion cost transformation programme, which aims to lower costs by $1bn over the next three years.
