Boots Ireland urgently recall over 30 products, including popular vitamins for children and pregnant women

Boots is recalling 31 products from its Irish stores over safety concerns.

The items are supplements including food, pregnancy, breastfeeding and conception supplements, as well as a variety of vitamins.

The pharmacy chain is removing the products from their stores due to the presence of a substance that is reactive to a pesticide.

2-chloroethanol, which is a recognised reaction product of ethylene oxide, was detected in the products.

Ethylene oxide is a pesticide that is not permitted for use in foods sold in the EU, but is approved for use by other countries outside the EU.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland issued the alert on Thursday.

It said that although the consumption of the contaminated product does not pose an acute risk to health, there is an increased risk if there is continued consumption of contaminated food over a long period of time.

Therefore, exposure to this substance needs to be minimised.

Point-of-sale recall notices will be displayed in Boots stores supplied with the implicated batches across Ireland.
