Boots closing 60 branches - including Scots stores - and redeploying pharmacists

Boots is set to close a number of stores across the UK as it aims to redeploy pharmacists to busier branches.

The high street firm announced 60 of its shops will shut as its staff deal with increased demand amid the coronavirus crisis, reports the Mirror.

Boots branches on Princes Street and Waverley Street train station in Edinburgh have been included on the list.

The healthcare firm's shops inside Glasgow and Aberdeen airports will also close.

Each of the units are deemed to be some of the least used in the country at the moment and will all be shut from Wednesday, April 15.

A spokesperson for Boots said: “We need to make sure that we have enough colleagues playing their vital role where it’s currently most needed and that we can send home those colleagues who are working in stores that are not busy. To achieve this, we are temporarily closing a small number of stores that are very quiet at this time.

“All over the country, we are working tirelessly to support the NHS and to provide our customers with the advice, healthcare, medicine and products that they need.

"We are committed to being there for the people that need us and we will not leave a community without a pharmacy.

"We would like to thank our colleagues for their work and our customers for their support and generosity.”
