
The red and yellow autumn leaves of maple, mountain ash and other trees on Hatcho Dejima, a small peninsula jutting into Lake Chuzenji, in Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture, are seen this week from a Yomiuri Shimbun helicopter. Visitors can also enjoy beautiful scenery from their cars on the famous winding road of Irohazaka, which connects the urban area of Nikko with the mountainous Oku-Nikko area. According to a local museum, the leaves in the area are changing color about two weeks later than usual because of the late summer heat and typhoons.
