Boost for St Mirren as they net six-figure reward for reaching League Cup semi-final stage

St Mirren might not have made the Betfred Cup final, but that didn’t stop them earning a massive cash boost for their impressive run in the competition.

While the Buddies were pipped to a final spot by Livingston in January, who went on to lose the showpiece to St Johnstone on Sunday afternoon, they have now been handed a cool £100,000 for making the final four.

Given the financial difficulties that have surrounded this season, with fans still locked out of the SMISA Stadium, the funds will be most welcome as the club continue to deal with the coronavirus pandemic.

The Paisley Saints enjoyed a superb run in the competition this season, topping their group before upsetting the odds to defeat Aberdeen in Paisley in the last 16.

They followed that with a sensational late 3-2 win over Rangers in the quarter-finals, handing Steven Gerrard’s side their only defeat to date this campaign.

While they succumbed to a narrow 1-0 defeat to the Lions at Hampden, they have still been rewarded for their progression to that stage as have Hibernian who also exited the competition in the semi-finals.

Livingston picked up £140,000 as beaten finalists, with St Johnstone earning a whopping £300,000 for bagging the trophy for the first time in their history.
