Boost for FAI as FIFA set to provide €462k from coronavirus relief fund

The FAI will receive around €462,000 from FIFA in the coming days as part of the organisation's coronavirus relief fund.

FIFA have allocated around €138 million to its 211 member national associations, plus any entitlement under the Forward 2.0 development programme.

It comes as a boost to the FAI, with the association already forced to defer salaries by up to 50%, having already being €45 million in debt before the pandemic.

"The pandemic has caused unprecedented challenges for the entire football community and, as the world governing body, it is FIFA's duty to be there and support the ones that are facing acute needs," FIFA chief Gianni Infantino said.

"This starts by providing immediate financial assistance to our member associations, many of which are experiencing severe financial distress. This is the first step of a far-reaching financial relief plan we are developing to respond to the emergency across the whole football community."

With FIFA sitting on cash reserves reportedly in the region of €2.5 billion, it's likely that national associations will receive further emergency funding in the future.
