Boost as Liverpool's new studios open for filming

Liverpool’s new pop up film studios have been formally approved by the city council – with thousands of pounds of further funding pumped into the key project.

The Depot, on Edge Lane, is a series of temporary studios built by the council to capitalise on a boom in filming following lockdowns at the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

The city has recently seen its busiest ever period for filming.

Located close to the Littlewoods Building, which is at the centre of longer term plans to become a film hub, The Depot is made up of two purpose-built, 20,000 sqft, sound-proofed film and TV production units.

Members of Liverpool Council’s cabinet approved just under £500,000 in grant funding today for further work on the project, as well as hiring staff to help support its operation.

Cabinet member for strategic development and housing Sarah Doyle said the pop up studios would be key to bringing further investment to the city.

Councillor Doyle said: “This is good news and shows that progress continues to be made on the ground that will lead to new skilled jobs, directly and indirectly, as well as delivering more investment to Liverpool.”

Mayor Joanne Anderson, who visited the site last month with metro mayor Steve Rotheram, said the creation of The Depot was “a great achievement”.

The new funding is set to be partially used to help clear a further plot near the pop up studios so that it can potentially be used for storage and wardrobe facilities.

It will also be used to hire new staff to help support the hub and fund salaries for a number of staff already working to support it.
