Boost as football fans told they could get back in to games

Football fans might be able to get into games from September 14, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said today.

While it's good news that some supporters might be able to access stadiums from next month, however, the First Minister made it very clear that it could all change again during the next few weeks, should there be a significant change in the number of Covid-19 cases in the country.

There was further good news for sports fans in indications that gyms and swimming pools will be able to reopen from August 31. ahead of the projected date of Monday, September 14, and there will be restrictions eased on outdoor live events and outdoor contact sports from Monday.

However, there will be a cap of 30 on the total number of people who can be coached at any one time.

Indoor non-contact sports for people aged 12 and over will be able to reopen from August 31, with contact sports resuming from September 14.

However, it's a significant boost for football fans and clubs, with news that they might be able to reopen, having been locked out since March, and with the Premiership season having started behind closed doors.

It's possible that test events with spectators might be held before the September 14 date.

Ms Sturgeon said during First Minister's Questions: "We hope from September 14 sports stadia will be able to open, but with a strict physical distancing in place.

"Some professional sports events might be arranged with spectators before then with a Scottish Government agreement to test the safety of any new arrangements."

All three of Scottish football's lower leagues are due to return on October 17, with a reduced 27-game plan,

A test event could take place at BT Murrayfield next week when Edinburgh Rugby take on Glasgow Warriors in PRO14.

Scottish football has been the subject of some high-profile transgressions in recent weeks, and players will need to remain on their best behaviour for fans to get back in.
