Boomtown Festival scraps plans for 2021 event

A major music festival which is organised in Bristol has been postponed for the second consecutive year.

Boomtown, which had sold out in February, was due to return to the Matterley Estate near Winchester in Hampshire between August 11-15.

But organisers have come to the "difficult decision" to pull the plug on 2021 due to the uncertainty surrounding the pandemic and the lack of a Covid-specific insurance plan for events set to take place this summer.

The next instalment of the 66,000-capacity event has been pushed back to August 10-14, 2022.

"We have been doing everything within our power to try to find a solution to the conundrum of putting on a safe and well-run event to the sheer scale, complexity and intricate nature of Boomtown this summer," said Boomtown organisers in a statement.

"Unfortunately, without any clear indication of what size events will be able to take place, and the conditions in which we will be able to operate, we have come to the conclusion that time has simply run out for us to be able to proceed in a way that would live up to our high safety and production standards for the event we had planned."

Organisers added that the financial risk of putting on a large-scale event without the "safety net" of Covid-specific cancellation insurance in place for events is "simply too high".

The festival has confirmed that all tickets for the 2021 event will remain valid for the 2022 festival and will automatically roll over.

In 2020 more than 77 per cent of Boomtown ticket-holders helped secure the future of the festival by holding onto their tickets.

The festival is asking attendees who are in a position to do so to do the same this year to "help safeguard the festival into 2022".
