Boomtown 2020: Everything you need to know about virtual festival

Like virtually every other festival planned to take place in the UK this year, Boomtown was cancelled due to Covid-19.

The event normally takes place two hours away from Bristol at the Matterley Estate in Hampshire and is organised in our city, from its St Phillip's headquarters.

It was due to take place between August 12 - 16 but was called off in April, with organisers saying they were "devastated" at having to make the call.

But the wildly creative team who stage the theatrical spectacle, which was due to be graced by the likes of Wu-Tang Clan, The Libertines and Underworld, are ensuring there will still be a party for us to enjoy.

Nothing beats being at the actual festival surrounded by like-minded people, of course, but Boomtown: The Lost Chapter will at least give us a taste of all the fun of the fair - from the comfort of our own living rooms.

Details of what the virtual showcase will include are currently scarce, but we can expect something pretty special given the track record of Boomtown's organisers.

"You know we'd never let the weekend of the festival pass by without putting on a show or two, getting some of our longstanding vibes masters to provide some tunes and generally just providing a platform to bring us all together; even if we’re still not able to meet up at our collective home physically," they said.

"We’re in talks with some of your most beloved street venues, as well a few special guests, to keep you entertained live from your own living room (or bedroom, or mates house, or garden… just not Matterley Estate!)

"Timings and details will be coming very soon but for now remember; this is about all of us, the entire Boomtown community, and we all need to see what each other is doing at home to celebrate too!"

People are encouraged to get into the spirit of things by sporting fancy dress - something revellers who regularly attend the festival are very good at - with awards up for grabs for those who put in the most effort.

Boomtown was set to take place with a new capacity of 76,999 in 2020 - an increase of 11,000 from 2019.

In November 2019 the festival launched a new 3,500-capacity venue at its headquarters in Albert Road, which has since welcomed a number of sell-out events.
