Another day, another commitment for the Ohio State football program. They’re seemingly coming every day now, and the latest is that of three-star 2020 outside linebacker Mitchell Melton.
Melton took to Twitter today to announce his decision and called it a blessing to commit to Ohio State. Out of Olney, Maryland, the 6-3, 235 lb. Melton is the No. 43 rated outside linebacker in the 2020 class according to 247Sports. But look, OSU doesn’t just go out and offer three-star recruits without seeing something beyond what the surface says.
The fact that Melton had offers from the likes of Michigan, Nebraska, Notre Dame, and Ole Miss should tell you all you need to know about where others feel he fits in the grand scheme of what’s out there.
What you need to know is that Melton can fit multiple roles with what Ohio State is trying to do on defense these days. He’s big enough to play a prototypical linebacker, but he could also put some more meat on the bones and put his hand on the ground to rush the edge. He also has a high upside.
So look beyond the three stars. I know I’ve gotten plenty of comments from fans that believe three-star recruits aren’t worth commenting on. Guys like A.J. Hawk, Santonio Holmes, James Laurinaitis, and Michael Thomas would tell you otherwise. They were all three-stars coming out of college.
