The Bookplate Cafe inside the National Library has announced it will be temporarily closed due to COVID-19 effects.

While the popular cafe is closed, the National Library is still open for its other facilities, including reading rooms, the bookshop and friends' lounge.

The cafe will reopen at 9am on Saturday, January 15 once staffing can facilitate customer demand.

This follows from businesses across Canberra suffering from ballooning COVID infections that wipe out staff from all industries.

Some businesses said waves of workers furloughed due to COVID have hit upon pre-existing pressure points, while others held onto staff through the capital's two-month lockdown, only to have to reduce their services as staff became unavailable.

Furthermore, businesses were starting to get hit with supply issues as staff shortages were felt across the supply chain, making products difficult to source.
